World Environment Day is first held in 1974 and celebrated on the 5th of June every year. It is coined by the United Nations (UN) as a campaign to raise awareness and inspire the public to act against environmental concerns including but not limited to marine pollution, global warming, human overpopulation, sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.
This significant day bears certain common traits with YKK Group’s environmental pledge, which states the following:
‘It is recognized today as being a most important duty for all humankind that we preserve the abundantly endowed global environment and that we transfer it to the next generation in a sound condition. Striving to be an Earth-friendly company, the YKK Group proclaims that it will address and promote “harmony with the environment” as the highest priority of its business activities.’
Echoing YKK Group’s philosophy and environmental pledge in ‘striving to be an Earth-friendly company’, YKK Group utilizes its global network to conduct the YKK Group Tree Planting Day on this fateful day.
YKK Asia has been conducting ‘Tree Planting Day’ since 2008. Over the course of time, countries including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand have contributed their part against this cause. As a collective, YKK Asia have planted thousands of trees with no plans on slowing down anytime soon.
YKK LANKA
On 12 June 2020, YKK Lanka conducted its annual tree planting activity with the participation of MD, Top management and all sectional representatives. In this short 30 minute activity, five varieties of fruit trees were planted on that day.
Research has shown that planting trees can alleviate effects of climate change by eliminating carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In fact, as a tree ages, it can consume 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. In return, it also releases sufficient oxygen to fuel an average person for up to 2 years.
YKK MALAYSIA
The annual Tree Planting Day for YKK Malaysia was carried out on 30th June 2020. It was a bittersweet event for them as it marks the last tree planting event in Larkin factory before relocating to a new site. This year, YKK Malaysia has chosen plotted plant named crimson penda or red penda for the event and was carried out by the Managing Director, Mr H.Yamasaki and Business Development Advisor, Ms K.Nishio.
YKK THAILAND
This year on 5 June 2020, YKK Thailand completed tree planting activity with 18 volunteers in the yard. A total of 20 Cerbera Odollam trees was planted on that day which help to increase greenery area. The purpose of this activity reduce smog and toxic dust which align with the environmental slogan 2020, “In 2020, the theme is Biodiversity. Biodiversity and its connection to humans”.
YKK KOREA
In May 2020, YKK Korea conducted a 3 hours tree planting activity which involved a total of 20 staff. Although it’s a short activity, everyone was excited about it and hoping to create a memorable experience.
YKK VIETNAM
Tree planting is recognised as one of the most engaging, environmentally annual activity that YKK Vietnam will take part in to create a greenery and clean environment at the factory. On 18 June 2020, there is a number of 20 Bucida Molinetis, a small, low and picturesque spreading plant growing to a height of around 4 feet has been planted this year.
YKK PAKISTAN
This year YKK Pakistan continues to make an impact to the planet by focusing on tree planting activity despite the global pandemic. There were a total of 4 trees planted on 18 June 2020 and 18 staff were involved in the activity with social distancing and other precaution measures took place.
YKK INDONESIA
YKK Indonesia conducted 2 hours annual tree planting activity at Cimanggis and Cibitung factories in 17 June 2020. Both factories have planted a total of 11 fruit trees around the factory area to celebrate the World’s Environment Day.
YKK TAIWAN
Tree planting not only counteracts deforestation, but tackles environmental issues ranging from global warming to food security. YKK Taiwan keeps up with Tree Planting activity tradition this year. There was a total of 15 plants planted on the day with 5 staffs participating in it.
